Abandoning the Cut
The Maasai are a nomadic people in Kenya and Tanzania. A community based around tradition that has resisted modernization, the Maasai have used female circumcision as a transition to womanhood for its girls around the age of 12. Although illegal in Kenya, the World Health Organization estimates that as many as 140 million women worldwide are living with the effects of FGM. As education is brought to the Maasai community of Esiteti in Kenya, with it has come knowledge of ending this practice. The people have agreed to transition to an Alternative Rite of Passage for their girls.
